The 16th China Import and Export Fair, Kunming is set for June 6 to 10 at the Kunming International Convention and Exhibition Center in the capital city of southwest China's Yunnan province.
The regional trade fair is jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce and seven local, provincial and regional governments from Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Tibet, Chongqing and Chengdu. Held for 15 consecutive years, the fair links sellers and buyers from China, Southeast Asia and South Asia.
In addition to great numbers of domestic buyers and more than 1,000 Chinese exhibitors, previous fairs attracted about 5,000 overseas guests from around 40 countries. Of its 2,300 booths, nearly 300 were occupied by participants from ASEAN countries.
The 2008 session of the Kunming Fair will as usual have 2,300 standard booths in a total exhibition area of 52,000 sq m that includes six pavilions - IT Industry, Machinery & Electronics, Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare Products, Agricultural Products, Chemical & Mineral Products, and Light Industrial & Textiles Products. Other pavilions will feature commodities from south Asia, southeast Asia and other countries, as well has those for cross-border trade, investment promotion, foreign business and trade services.
GMS
The Kunming Fair will include the GMS Economic Corridor Forum, the Third China-South Asia Business Forum, the Sixth ASEAN Chinese Merchants Southeast China Investment Projects Promotion Convention and the Asia- Pacific Chinese Merchants Forum.
The Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Economic Cooperation Program was initiated by the Asian Development Bank in 1992 to promote links for economic and social development in the region.
Yunnan is the main province in China involved in various GMS projects. In 2007 trade volume between Yunnan and GMS countries reached $2.158 billion, up 53.8 percent from the year before. It is expected to surpass $3 billion by 2010.
Yunnan now has 78 economic and technical cooperation projects with GMS countries with an aggregate contract value of $570 million. Contracted investments from Yunnan companies in GMS countries totals about $150 million.
Yunnan province
Yunnan is China's most biologically diverse province. It has snow-capped mountains and true tropical environments that support an unusually wide spectrum of species and vegetation.
Many resources in Yunnan have great potential for further development. Tobacco and flowers are now important to the province's economy.
Yunnan shares borders with Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam, and is close to Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, India and Bangladesh. Its total border length of 4,061 km accounts for about one-fifth of China's total.
The province has more than 20 State-class ports, with multiple railways, highways and waterways linking it to neighboring provinces and countries. It also has direct flights to all major cities in Southeast Asia helping it serve as a bridge connecting the Chinese market of 1.3-billion people to Southeast Asia's population of 500 million people and more than 1 billion in South Asia.
